mountain的意思是山脉，大山，除了有“山”的意思，hill的意思是小山，山冈；斜坡，把…堆成小山。mountains常表示“山脉”通常指比hill大或陡峭的高山。
mountain和hill的区别是什么
1. 通常hill的海拔高度比mountain的低，通常是低于2000英尺，看起来像一个“肿块”，山顶常呈现或丘状，而mountain的海拔高度最低通常是大于2000英尺。
2. 当描述当地的地形时，通常用山或山峰来表示，此时山的名字里就常含有 mountain 和 Mount，而不用 hill，如胡德山（Mount Hood）, Mount Ranier（拉尼尔山）等等。
3. Mountain通常都有一个名词和一个主峰，且有陡峭的山坡，不容易攀爬，因此登山有的时候是一个极大的挑战，而 hill 通常没有名字，顶端比较圆，容易攀爬，所以登山运动中的山通常是指mountain。
4. 当然也存在例外，有时山名中含有hill的山也被认为是mountain，如拉科塔印第安人命名的黑山或布莱克山（the Black Hills）。
