the后面既可以加单数，也可以加复数名词，主要看实际的语意。定冠词the具有确定的意思，用以特指人或事物，它可以和单、复数名词连用，也可以和不可数的名词连用。
the的用法
1、the用在特定的人或物的名词前，表示特指。
2、用来指上文中已提到过或谈话双方都知道的人或事物。
There is a chair in the room. An old man is sitting onthechair.房间里有一把椅子，椅子上坐着一位老人。这个后半句中的the就是代指前文中已经提到的这把椅子。
3、用于表示世界上独一无二的事物名词前以及普通名词构成的专有名词前。
the sun太阳;the moon月亮;the earth地球;the Great Wall长城;the United States美国等。
4、定冠词the的位置：定冠词通常位于名词或名词修饰语前，但放在all， both，double，half，twice，three times等词之后，名词之前。
